A funeral prayer has been held for the Maldivian man who died while in Mecca to perform Umrah pilgrimage.

Mohamed Rafeeu, 68 and native to Seenu atoll Hithadhoo, passed away while in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on Umrah pilgrimage on Tuesday.

He is reported to have died while receiving treatment at a hospital. Rafeeu was admitted to the hospital after contracting the flu.

His funeral prayer took place after Fajr prayer at the most sacred Masjid for Muslims in Mecca, Masjid al-Haram.

Many Maldivians are expected to travel to Mecca to perform Umrah during the ongoing fasting month of Ramadan as well.

Some of the pilgrims have already departed for Umrah, with the rest scheduled to depart in the upcoming week.

Muslims from all over the world are travelling to Mecca to perform Umrah during this Holy month.
