Three have been arrested in connection with drug operations carried out in two different islands.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the operations were conducted in two different islands, as part of the efforts underway to curb drug trafficking and smuggling in the Maldives.
During a police operation conducted on November 3 in Meedhoo island in Dhaalu atoll following a tip-off, a 26-year-old Maldivian man was arrested for being in possession of drugs.
The man was arrested with a rubber packet stuffed with suspected drugs.
Upon being presented to the Kudahuvadhoo Magistrate Court for his remand, the 26-year-old was remanded by three days in a facility allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Further, a 36-year-old Maldivian man and a 40-year-old Maldivian man were arrested from the harbor region during a separate operation in Velidhoo island in Noonu atoll on November 4.
The operation stemmed from an intel report that the two suspects were widely trafficking and smuggling drugs in the island.
The operation was carried out by the officers stationed in Velidhoo as well as the Police Intelligence Unit.
Police officers discovered 23 rubber packets filled with suspected narcotics, upon searching the two suspects.
Upon being presented to the Velidhoo Magistrate Court for their remand, the two were remanded by 10 days in a facility allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Further investigations are currently underway in connection with both cases.
