The Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hameed (CP Hameed) has said that special efforts are being made in 10 islands to save the country from the menace of drug abuse.

Speaking to Raajje MV at the Viyavathi Raajje conference, the CP said that one of the biggest social problems facing Maldives is drugs-abuse. The CP said that in five of these islands police are making every effort to curb drug trafficking and abuse, while in the other five islands focuss is mainly on keeping them drug free .

He said that in these five islands police will work with the relevant authorities to prevent the spread of the menace into these islands. However, the CP kept the names of these five islands a secret , saying he would share the names with the media at a later date . The Commissioner of Police said that since 2018, the neighborhood police have done commendable work to bring offenders back into society.

The CP said that special efforts are being made to prevent drug trafficking and to expand the role of the police in rehabilitating drug users and bringing them back to society.

The police are working to establish 'drug free islands' in some parts of the country under the five-year action plan. A video documentary on the topic was presented at the Viyavathi seminar . The seminar will also discuss irradiating organized crime and extremism.
