Premeditated, preplanned unlawful deeds being done was taped and used as blackmail to coerce people out of their money according to former President and current President of the people’s parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
Multiple people were found taking part in unlawful acts with a foreign man on video. The videos surfaced on social media leading to a police investigation commencing shortly after. And the use of the videos to blackmail and extort money was brought to the attention of the police in March of this year. Which led to the arrest of the foreigner along with some Maldivians for further investigations, the case led to arrests of political figures, different organizations including people in the educational field.
In the press conference held on Monday President Nasheed stated that the case needs to be looked into by the law.

A blackmail case pertaining to the videos is being investigated according to the police. The police revealed these details as the news that many people are being extorted with the use of the videos had been going around.
However, this is the first time a political figure has acknowledged the ransom and blackmail.
The foreigner detained due to the case of the videos was a Bangladeshi man, MD Alamgeer. By far there is no admission agreement between him said the prosecutor general’s office. Alamgeer had committed unlawful acts with multiple people and had recorded it. In the efforts to identify the people in the blackmail materials different committees, educators, MNDF and police uniformed people had been suspended.
