The first couple has participated in the commemorative flag hoisting ceremony to mark the 57th anniversary of Maldives’ Independence.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed attended the ceremony held at the Republic Square early Tuesday.
Vice President Faisal Naseem and other senior government officials joined the ceremony, which began at 05:50am.
The first couple was welcomed by the Minister of Defence and National Security, Mariya Ahmed Didi and Minister of Home Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdulla upon arrival at the Republic Square.
The ceremony saw a special prayer recited by Sheikh Ahmed Maumoon.
The celebrations marking Maldives’ Independence Day will proceed from July 26 – 30.
Maldives celebrates independence on July 26 every year since gaining independence from the British on the 26 July 1965 after 77 years as a British protectorate.
