PGA urges to support non-self-governing territories on Covid-19 recovery efforts
PGA Shahid also urged to benefit from the opportunity to identify ways to support these territories on their recovery efforts
He urged to make this the beginning of a productive period of actions and results in support of the decolonization process
Covid-19 worsened the pre-existing challenges for non-self-governing territories

President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid has urged to identify ways to support non-self-governing territories on their recovery efforts as they emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The PGA’s statement was delivered at the Closing meeting of the Pacific Regional Seminar by the Special Envoy to the PGA and Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, Ambassador Thilmeeza Hussain.

The Pacific Regional Seminar revolved around the theme on the Covid-19 pandemic this year, with which the PGA noted that everyone has suffered from the pandemic, however, not everyone endured it the same.

This being said, the statement read that Covid-19 only worsened the pre-existing challenges such as climate change and the devastating effects of natural disasters, for some non-self-governing territories.

The statement goes on to read that the gathering allowed stakeholders from all fields and at all levels to share views and to identify concrete actions to advance the decolonization agenda, especially during recovery from Covid-19.

The PGA has urged the people to benefit from the opportunity to identify ways to support such territories on their recovery efforts as they emerge from the pandemic.

He also pushed the countries of the world to make this, the beginning of a “productive” period of actions and results in support of the decolonization process.

The PGA’s statement goes onto urge the people to ensure that this Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism as mandated by the General Assembly in 2020, “finally” honors the fact that all peoples have the right to self-determination in accordance with the General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV).
