There is no better health investment any nation can make, than in immunization, says Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives and President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid.

He made this remark in his message on the occasion of World Immunization Week, on Friday.

As such, the PGA noted that the globe celebrates world immunization week amidst a global pandemic, for a third consecutive year in 2022.

This being said, the Maldivian Foreign Minister stressed that Covid-19 has claimed more than six million lives worldwide, infected half a billion people and “starkly” underscored the need for a “fair” and “equitable” access to vaccines.

Highlighting that vaccine inequity deprives the “poorest” and the “most vulnerable” from the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, PGA Shahid claimed that vaccine inequity entraps countries and communities in vicious cycles.

The science is clear; immunization protects, immunization prevents. Time and time again history has shown us that vaccines save lives.”

He went on to claim that vaccines protect future generations from infectious diseases and allows the people to live healthier and longer lives, whether it is Diphtheria, Tetanus, Influenza, Measles, Polio or Hepatitis.

With this being noted, PGA Shahid asserted that there is no better health investment any nation can make, than in immunization as immunization is the most “cost-effective” way to ensure “global” health security.

PGA Shahid urged the world to work together to drive away vaccine hesitancy and help immunize the people by committing to sharing this life-saving products of human ingenuity with, quote “everyone”, “everywhere”.
