The government is to establish a National Digital Identification System.
The decision was announced on Tuesday, following a meeting conducted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih with his Cabinet of Ministers.
The decision was reached following deliberations on a paper proposed on the matter by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology.
The decision to establish and adopt a National Digital Identification System comes under the administration’s National Resilience and Recovery Plan (NRR) 2020–2022.
The National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and the Department of National Registration (DNR) will jointly collaborate in developing and maintaining the system.
The system will enable authorities to adopt biometric technologies in DNRs' identity management systems.
It will also pave way for the introduction of contactless identification cards.
The initiative will also see NICT and DNR developing digital identification applications for smartphones and extending the use of the digital identification platform to the private sector.
