Two individuals were arrested from the rally staged by the opposition coalition on Friday.
Initially, the opposition coalition, comprising of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC), organized to stage a vehicle parade on Friday evening, However, Maldives Police Service (MPS) disallowed it citing reports of the rally being held to create chaos among the public.
With this, police officers had closed off the roads near PPM office, to the public.
This led to supporters of the opposition gathering to protest near the barricaded area, where there was an altercation between protestors and police officers.
Police revealed that two individuals were taken into police custody for obstructing law enforcement officers.
The opposition party organized the vehicle parade for Friday evening, under its “India Out!” campaign, which has been stepped up more than ever since the release of their leader, Former President Abdulla Yameen.
The Supreme Court in November overturned the five-year prison sentence slapped on Yameen, who was found guilty of money laundering in 2019 and released him from prison, the opposition party has been hosting rallies every Friday.
The opposition coalition has also begun collecting signatures for a petition under its “India Out!” campaign, which is ongoing in atolls as well.
