The government has strongly condemned the disrespectful acts by the opposition during a demonstration held on Thursday, within the Eid festivities.

In a statement publicized on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the opposition’s attempts to spread false information through multiple platforms using the “India Out” slogan.

During its demonstrations in commemoration of Eid-Al-Adha, the opposition had taken to the streets, with “India Out” slogans and masks depicting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face.

The statement reads that such dishonorable acts by the opposition regarding one of the key bilateral partners of the island nation and its leadership during such an auspicious occasion which is supposed to bring peace, joy and harmony, does not only provoke hatred, but also promote hostility with the purpose of soiling the Maldives’ long-standing cordial ties with India.

Highlighting that the strong bilateral relationship between the two neighboring countries is based on shared historical and cultural ties matched by dynamic people to people contact, the ministry revealed that India has always been the closest ally of Maldives, as well as a trusted neighbor having extended constant and consistent support on all fronts.

Further, the ministry went on to highlight that the long-standing ties between Maldives and India have been elevated to new heights during the past five years of the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, with the strong commitment of the leadership of both countries.

Stressing that Maldives appreciates India’s ‘Neighborhood First Policy’, the ministry revealed that the government of Maldives will uphold its ‘India First’ policy.

As such, the government remains committed to cementing the close ties it shares with India.

This said, the government has urged all parties to act “responsibly” and refrain from such disrespectful acts and spreading false information that could undermine the country’s relations with its neighbors as well as the international community.
