President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has discussed development plans for Gaafaru island in Kaafu atoll, with the island council and Women's Development Committee (WDC).
During the meeting held as part of the president’s brief visit to the island to join the celebrations of the 41st National Fishermen’s Day, the councilors shared their pertinent issues and pressing concerns with the president.
The meeting saw the councilors expressing gratitude for the development of the recently inaugurated 25-tonne ice plant and the introduction of a police post on the island.
The president was briefed on issues such as land scarcity, upgrading healthcare services, beach erosion as well as delays in launching the water and sewerage network project and difficulties due to space constraints in the island’s school.
The need for improved waste management facilities and banking services in the island, was also discussed.
Further, the meeting saw WDC members sharing challenges in delivering their responsibilities due to a lack of dedicated office space, with the president.
Speaking to the members regarding ways the administration could resolve their concerns, the president revealed that funds have been allocated for projects to address most of their concerns, in the state budget for 2022.
Moreover, the meeting also saw Vice President Faisal Naseem briefing the island council and WDC on the administration’s developmental initiatives for the island.
Before the meeting with the council and WDC, the president visited the newly established police post on the island, inaugurated by Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla on Saturday.
He visited the island’s health center as well.
