Tuesday's hearing in the domestic assault trial against Kendhikulhudhoo constituency MP Ahmed Easa has been cancelled.

The domestic violence assault case was filed by Easa’s ex-wife Asra Naseem on May 18. While she accused him for assaulting her and threatening their child, Asra has made attempts to withdraw the case saying it was filed in the heat of the moment.

This request was however rejected, and the case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office who charged the Kendhikulhudhoo MP with domestic assault on June 3 under Section 120 (b) (2) of the Penal Code, pertaining to Section 120 (a) (1).

The first hearing in the case scheduled for June 21, but was cancelled as well.

Both the June and Tuesday's hearings were cancelled due to the judge overseeing the trial being on sick leave, according to the Criminal Court. The trial is being presided by Judge Hussain Faiz Rashaad; one of the three Criminal Court being investigated after alleged audio clips leaked online this Sunday.

While the parliamentarian denies the allegations, PG Office had also requested for Easa’s arrest, but was denied by the lower court citing no grounds.
