Majlis to reconvene for third session, on Monday

The first sitting of the third session scheduled for 9am on Monday

The People's Majlis will reconvene for the third and final session of the year, on Monday.

While the parliament went into recess on July 8 following the conclusion of the second session which was extended to complete important work, the first sitting of the third session will start at 9am on Monday.

Four works are currently on the agenda for the first sitting, including reviewing the names forwarded by the president for the post of Information Commissioner as well as for Elections Commission membership. Further, debate on a bill regarding birth and death registration has also been tabled for Monday's sitting, as well as amendment to the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act.

A total of 22 meetings were held during the second parliament session which started on May 17. Some of the important bills passed during the previous session include – the sixth amendment legislation to the Judges Act of Maldives, the first amendment to the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act, amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act, amendment to the Airport Taxes and Fees Act, amendment to the Income Tax Act and amendment to the Sea Vessels Act.

With Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed still abroad for treatment for injuries sustained in the assassination attempt on May 6, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla is expected to preside over the sittings.

While the third session will continue till November, lawmakers will vote on the 2022 state budget which is to be submitted by the finance ministry by October.
