President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared that today, a majority of the parliament stands by his side.

President Solih made this statement while answering a question asked by a news reporter at Wednesday’s press conference. The president stated that in order for the government to move forward smoothly and for the needs of the public to be fulfilled, the majority of the parliament will stand together.

He noted that having the support of the Parliament’s majority is very important when being a leader as it would be difficult to run an entire nation without them. He highlighted the fact that the year 2008, when Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) first ruled is evidence of the fact that a lot of obstacles are to be faced in ruling when majority of the parliament is not on the ruler’s side.

President Solih then stated that former president Abdulla Yameen ruled in ease until he lost the support of the parliament’s majority back in 2013.

Therefore, President Solih affirmed that he will continue to always ensure that the majority of the parliament is on his side.

President Solih highlighted that although he and Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed have political differences, it is not an issue. He stated that Nasheed ruled as he saw best for the country during his time and that he will rule as he sees best during his time.

He concluded by stating that he as the opportunity to rule again and hopes to fulfill all promises he made during his campaign.
