With the first death reported in August, Maldives Covid-19 death toll has been pushed to 222.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has identified the latest Covid-19 victim as a 94-year-old Maldivian man.

The man was pronounced dead by doctors at the Fuvahmulah Atoll Hospital at 9am on Tuesday.

Of the 222 deaths reported from Covid-19 so far, 172 have been reported thus far in 2021.

Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020.

The latest victim has been confirmed just a few days after the 221st vicitm was reported; a 52-year-old Maldivian woman who succumbed to complications of the virus in the Dhuvaafaru Health Center. The 220th fatality was also reported from Dhuvaafaru island.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June while 10 deaths were reported in July.
