President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the government aims to have 90 percent of the eligible population vaccinated by August.

While addressing the public in his speech to commemorate the country's 56th Independence Day on Monday, the president stressed that the main goal is "complete vaccination of all Maldivians".

He added that "this is a privilege currently enjoyed by only a handful of countries around the world".

Stressing that the country now has enough stocks to administer two doses to those who have not been fully vaccinated, the president urged all to "to make use of this opportunity and complete vaccine dosage".

Our current situation calls upon us to unite our nation and offer our full support. The Government requires the help and cooperation of all citizens in our efforts to protect Maldivians from the Covid-19 pandemic.

While Maldives first Covid-19 cases were confirmed in March 2020, the government launched the nationwide vaccination drive on February 1 this year.

Authorities earlier this month revealed that 50 percent of the Maldives' eligible population has been fully vaccinated.

During his speech on Monday, President Soih also gave thanks to healthcare workers, Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) as well as all volunteers, for their hard work to tackle Covid-19.
