A child sex offender has been jailed for 32 years.
The man, a 52-year-old, was convicted on four counts of sexual offenses against a minor, his stepdaughter in southern Fuvahmulah City.
Some of the counts include indecent exposure to a child, showing the child inappropriate pornographic scenes while being in a position trusted by the child as well as engaging in sexual activity with a child while being in a trusted position to the child.
The child sex offender was sentenced to 32 years, one month and 27 days in prison.
Taking to Twitter following the conviction, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem applauded the PG branch being operated in southernmost Addu City, for their successful prosecution.
The case of the child sex offender was handled by the PG Branch in Addu with the joint efforts from the Maldives Police Service, prosecutors and the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.
PG Shameem shed light on the good progress of the case and stressed that more work needs to be done to sustain these efforts.
The incident of a child being sexually abused was reported to have occurred between May 2019 and July 2020.
The man was initially arrested on July 2020, following which the case was forwarded for prosecution during August 2020.
