Maldives reported 295 new Covid-19 cases on Friday.

The cases were confirmed from over 4,000 samples tested, and 138 of the 295 cases are from the greater Male’ region while 146 are from residential islands and 11 from resorts.

This pushes the country’s Covid-19 tally to 69,831.

Further, with the 1,504 recoveries reported on Friday, a total of 56,559 patients have recovered from the virus in the Maldives.

While an additional death was reported earlier, this bring the country’s death count from Covid-19 to 192.

111 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals across the island nation.

While the government began easing Covid-19 restrictions last year following a decline in cases, there was recently a spike later confirmed as the "fourth wave", forcing authorities to strengthen Covid-19 restrictions especially in the capital. This includes an unofficial lockdown of the city, with a curfew imposed from 4pm to 8am and residents requiring permits to be out even during the remaining time.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday announced that the strengthened safety measures will remain for an additional week, and will be extended again if the need arises.

Since the measures were strengthened in mid-May, reported daily cases have been decreasing gradually.
