The Anti-Corruption Commission of Maldives (ACC) have forwarded charges to the Prosecutor General's Office against former Managing Director of Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC) Mohamed Shahid and Deputy Managing Director Shakeeba Hussain.

Mohamed Shahid and Shakeeba Hussain have been charged with corruption in acquiring a cold sparks machine through a company named Links I for the New Year Show held in Male' City for the year 2018. They had reportedly spent USD 7,234 to acquire the cold sparks machine, and the ACC's investigation into the case suggests that Mohamed Shahid and Shakeeba Hussain, had as Managing Director and Deputy MD for MITDC respectively, gone through with the acquisition in order to deliver illicit profits from the exchange to Links I company.

The ACC's investigation into the case notes that while the machine had been purchased for an amount totaling MVR 111,548, MITDC had not sought the powder needed to operate the machine leading up to the 2018 New Year Show at Carnival in Male' City. In addition to this, the MITDC had issued payments for the machine against their payment policy, and had failed to present a management decision, purchase request, quotation, purchase order and invoice before issuing full payment for the machines. MITDC had not sought to claim the machines after they had been transported to Male', and the ACC report also finds that Links I had made no attempts to deliver the machines, the acquisition cost of which had been issued from the state budget for MITDC.

The ACC report finds that Mohamed Shahid had been the Managing Director of MITDC at the time of the incident, with Shakeeba Hussain positioned as the Deputy Managing Director of MITDC. The ACC are seeking charges against them under Article 12 of the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act (No.: 2/2000) for obtaining undue advantage as government employees and Subsection 513 of the Penal Code for misuse of government authority to obtain personal benefits.
