Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has secured a landslide victory for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Malé City presidency.

Polling carried out from 2:30pm to 9pm on Friday, for the main opposition party’s council by-election.

According to the provisional results of the polling booths set up in the Malé area, Azim is leading the votes.

He competed against former parliamentarian Mohamed Falah.

According to provisional results, Azim secured more than 1,079 votes with Falah falling behind with just 470 votes.

Members have been elected to 21 vacant seats in the party's national council.

Ballot boxes were stationed across 24 islands across the Maldives for the by-elections.

Voting proceeded at Hiriya School and Thaajudheen School in the capital city.

Former Mayor of Malé City, Shifa served as the president of MDP’s Malé City constituency.

However, the seat became vacant after Shifa left MDP.
