The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to hold it’s “Ran Reendhoo” run, in celebration of its 20th anniversary,
The main opposition party revealed that the run will take place on August 1, in Hulhumalé.
The event was originally scheduled for July 18 in the Hulhumalé Central Park area. However, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) refused to grant permission for the venue. MDP then shifted plans to host the run in Malé City on July 25, but that request was also denied by the government.
However, the government has since granted permission for MDP's "Ran Reendhoo" run to be held in Hulhumalé. Following the approval, MDP has confirmed that the "Ran Reendhoo" run will be held at Hulhumalé Central Park on August 1.
Taking to social media on Thursday regarding the matter, MDP stated that they postponed the run to August 1 because they have now received permission to hold it in Hulhumalé. The party said that arrangements have been made to hold the run in Hulhumalé with the assistance of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
The party also said that further details about the event will be revealed in the coming days.
MDP had previously indicated that if last-minute permission was granted to hold the “Ran Reendhoo” run at Hulhumalé Central Park, they would proceed with the event there. Following the government’s approval, the party moved the run back to Central Park.
Earlier, when permission to hold the run in Hulhumalé was denied, MDP submitted a formal letter to the Elections Commission (EC) expressing their concerns over the matter.
The “Ran Reendhoo” run is a nationwide event organized by MDP, symbolically carrying the party’s torch across islands throughout the Maldives. The run is set to conclude in May next year, marking a year-long campaign of outreach and engagement.
