Even on their second visit, members of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group (PG) were refused a meeting with Governor Ahmed Munawar.
The MDP Parliamentary Group initially sought a meeting with the governor on Monday, but after keeping them waiting for more than two hours, the governor did not grant them an audience.
For the second time, members of MDP visited the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) on Tuesday in a second attempt to meet with the governor. However, after waiting for an hour, the governor once again declined to meet with them.
MDP members are seeking a meeting with the governor amid growing public and business concerns over the unchecked surge in the dollar exchange rate. The black market rate for the U.S. dollar has now climbed above MVR 20, fueling economic anxiety across the Maldives.
Frustrated by the governor’s continued refusal to engage, MDP members have voiced strong dissatisfaction and announced their decision to visit the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) daily until a meeting is granted.
