National Day 2020 - flag hosting ceremony
The annual flag hoisting ceremony on the occasion of this year’s National Day was held at the Republic Square, early Sunday morning, with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and senior government officials in attendance. National Day is celebrated on the first day of Rabi' al-awwal every year. The day is marked to commemorate the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam against the Portuguese invaders, ending a 15 year-long occupation of the Maldives in 1573.

Opposition protests in capital amid Covid-19 crisis
41 protesters were arrested on Saturday, for violating the Health Protection Agency |(HPA)’s safety rules. The opposition claims to not having any involvement with the protest.

New park opened in Kihaadhoo island
The park, developed by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment together with the B. Kihaadhoo island council, was opened on Friday.

Fire rages through building in Maldives capital
A fire broke out in a building located in Boduthakurufaanu Magu of Maldives capital Malé City on Friday night, in the Henveiru ward of the city. The fire is raging the building where State Bank of India (SBI) is located.

Bodufinolhu unrest
The unrest began on Thursday when a large group of migrant workers secured the Bodufinolhu island in Baa atoll, being developed as a resort, and took 12 Maldivians into captivity, through the protests. The protests churned due to unpaid salaries for months and a few police officers were injured in the confrontation.

Ever since the lockdown was imposed across the Greater Malé Region on April 15, local fishermen have been expressing concern as the local fish market was also shuttered. However, it has been opened under a set of conditions.

On Thursday, 190 Indonesians and 47 Europeans were repatriated from the Maldives under an operation to evacuate mass communities of foreigners who have been stranded in the Maldives due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Stormy weather floods the streets of Male
Since the southwest monsoon began, grey rain clouds have been hovering over most parts, drenching the scatter of islands with showers and causing some cities as well as islands to flood. Repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals
353 Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated via a flight of BIMAN Bangladesh Airline on Saturday. The flight was charted by the Maldivian government. The government has been working to repatriate all of the undocumented Bangladeshi workers in the country.

Intense monsoon wreaks havoc across Maldives
MET issued the first ever orange alert across the Maldives on Friday. Maldives experiences the southwest monsoon from May to November and the adverse weather conditions usually have authorities on their toes due to the number of incidents in its wake. Within the past couple of days, a number of such incidents have occurred, especially on Friday where officers of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) as well as locals have been active in relief efforts from flooding across the scatter of islands and damage caused to households due to fallen trees and torn roofs.

Work to repatriate Bangladeshi nationals in the Maldives
The Labour Relations Authority and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been working to send a number of Bangladeshi nationals, home after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that authorities are working to send about 1,500 undocumented workers from Bangladesh. Some of them have been transferred to the testing facility in Hulhumalé. Most of them are forced to live in congested living spaces, especially in capital Malé and 50% of the confirmed Covid-19 cases in the Maldives are Bangladeshi nationals.

Mosquito fogging program in Maldives capital
At a time the impending fear of the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic have the citizens locked up indoors, mosquito-borne disease such as dengue, and others such as influenza have been lingering, especially since the monsoon season began. The Malé City council has been fogging the capital city every morning, under the initiative to curb the spread of such diseases.

INS Magar sets sail with 202 Indian nationals stranded in Maldives
While the Indian government has launched one of its biggest exercises to evacuate its nationals stranded abroad amid the Covid-19 pandemic, 202 people departed the Maldives on INS Magar on Sunday. 698 Indian national left the country on Friday as well.
