Hours after the country's Covid-19 death toll was pushed to 90, Maldives confirmed another Covid-19 fatality.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that this is the fourth death to have been reported on Friday.

As such, the latest victim has been identified as a 78-year-old man, also a Maldivian, who succumbed to complications of the virus at around 12:48pm. He was rushed to the Emergency Room of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

The victims identified earlier on Friday are a 64-year-old man, an 86-year-old man and an 86-year-old woman.

The 86-year-old man died at around 2:24am while receiving treatment at the Hulhumalé Medical Facility and is the 88th Covid-19 victim in the Maldives. The 89th Covid-19 victim is the 64-year-old man who was admitted for Covid-19 treatment at Hulhumalé Medical Facility as well, before doctors pronounced him dead at 6:30am. Another death was reported at 9:05am when an 86-year-old woman was declared the 90th Covid-19 victim, while she was being treated on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital.

The pandemic has claimed 42 lives in the Maldives during 2021, 18 of which have been reported thus far in May. This is the highest number of deaths to have been reported in a month.

Authorities earlier stressed that Covid-19 fatalities had doubled in count since January 2021. As such, while four deaths were observed in January, the number increased to 10 during February. Six Covid-19 fatalities were reported during March as well as April.

With an alarming spike in case count over the past few days, hospitalizations are also increasing in comparison to the past month. Currently there are 259 Covid-19 patients hospitalized for treatment.

Maldives active Covid-19 tally is currently at 13,784 with over 41,000 infections having been confirmed nationwide since the pandemic surfaced in the island nation on 7 March 2020. Authorities have imposed strict measures in the capital region as well as in outlying atolls in light of the spiking cases. As such, a 12-hour curfew is effective in Maldives capital from 4pm to 4am.
