Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has increased security measures in the Greater Malé Region as well as the rest of the archipelago nation as armed presence continues nationwide.

The armed officers were deployed regionwide following a terrorist attack on the life of Former President and current Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.

In a Twitter post on Thursday night, MNDF revealed that their armed presence continues throughout the country and that they have boosted security measures nationwide as well.

Nasheed underwent a 16-hour procedure to remove shrapnel lodged inside his body in the IED explosion denotated near his residence as he was heading out to attend an event on an island. The IED was strapped to a blue motorcycle and denoted right before Nasheed stepped inside his car. His security personnel were quick to respond and transported the injured former president to ADK Hospital within seven minutes.

MNDF officers as well as Nasheed’s security personnel attained several injuries due to the explosion as well.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) earlier revealed that they are utilizing all necessary resources available for investigation and forensic teams in the probe, which is being carried out as an “urgent” priority.

Three suspects were arrested soon after the attack, with one of them being the prime suspect believed to be seen in CCTV footage showing an individual detonating the device and running off.

The suspects have since been remanded by 15 days and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has given his assurance that perpetrators in the attack on Nasheed’s life will be brought to justice as thorough investigations conclude.
