The government is in discussions to strengthen measures placed as a safeguard against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Taking to Twitter to express concern over the recent spike in Covid-19 infections being reported daily across the nation, President Solih said that the caseload has reached alarming levels and that the government will undertake discussions to strengthen measures nationwide, on Monday.

With this being said the president has reminded the public to strictly adhere to the current guidelines and measures in place in order to slow the spread of Covid-19.

This comes at a time Maldives confirmed more than 500 new infections on Sunday, making it the highest rise in daily cases reported since the pandemic surfaced in the island nation.

The alarming spike in cases led to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) imposing a travel ban across residential islands, unless for essential purposes and healthcare services.

Hospital admissions have also been increasing across the capital city of recent, with public health authorities stressing that 60 percent of hospital beds in the capital region are occupied currently.

Maldives Covid-19 tally currently sits at 30,745 with 5,594 active infections.
