A foreigner has succumbed to Covid-19 complications in Maldives.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) identified the deceased as a 39-year-old Indian man who was admitted at the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital for Covid-19 treatment.

The man was pronounced dead by doctors at around 8:31pm on Saturday.

This has been declared as the 74th Covid-19 fatality in the island nation and the 26th life claimed by the coronavirus pandemic this ongoing year.

Six Covid-19 fatalities were reported in the Maldives within the past month, including one Indian national and five Maldivians, with the most recent death being reported on 29 April.

With an alarming spike in case count over the past few days, hospitalizations are also increasing in comparison to the past month. Currently there are 161 Covid-19 patients hospitalized for treatment.

Maldives active Covid-19 tally is currently at 5,221 with over 30,000 infections having been confirmed nationwide since the pandemic surfaced in the island nation during March 2020.
