Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed has tested positive for the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In a Twitter post confirming that he is currently in home isolation after contracting the virus, CP Hameed revealed that he had participated in the first police board meeting virtually.

The Police Commissioner welcomed all seven members on the board while taking part in the meeting virtually.

During his statement in the meeting, CP Hameed gave the seven members his assurance that the police institution will see it as a “critical partner” to make policing more effective within the system.

He also assured that MPS will be made a more accountable organization.

Ratified on 27 December 2020 following approval from the People’s Majlis during its third session of 2020, the legislation to the Maldives Police Act which ensures police officers are in line with human rights best practices, carries the purpose of enhancing police responsibility and grants the necessary legal protection to MPS and police officers in carrying out their duties.

The legislation mandates the establishment of a Police Board comprising of seven members, within 14 days of ratification and includes two members appointed by the president, two members from the public and three with expertise in the field.

The two members from the general public are appointed after the People’s Majlis reviews and passes applications for the posts.
