President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reaffirmed that efforts are underway to resolve the challenges surfacing due to continuous severe weather conditions across the Maldives.

On Monday the president made phone calls to the mayors of southernmost Addu City and Fuvahmulah City, respectively, to check on the situation surrounding severe weather conditions in the region.

This comes at a time Maldives Meteorological Services (MMS) has been issuing several white, yellow and even orange alerts across the southernmost atolls after predicting torrential rain showers and possible flooding across the region.

In the wake of the continuous monsoon showers, several parts of the southernmost cities were flooded and during his calls to the Addu City Mayor, Abdulla Sodiq and Fuvahmulah City Mayor Abdulla Falah, the president inquired about the severity of the damages caused due to the storms, strong gusts of wind and torrential rain showers that caused heavy flooding.

Solih also asked about the current state of affairs and deliberated with the mayors to ease the difficulties currently facing the residents.

Further, the president also called respective parliamentarians representing both cities.

Most of the households in Addu and Fuvahmulah cities have been flooded due to continuous downpours since Sunday night. Strong winds have also torn off the roofs of some households and uprooted trees which have caused blockages on the roads. Floods have left residents in both cities with damaged household items and furniture, incurring immense losses.

Due to sewerage waters infesting water wells in Fuvahmulah City, Fuvahmulah Hospital has since begun work to chlorinate the well water across the city.

Over the past 24 hours, the meteorological department confirmed the heaviest rain showers to have occurred across Addu City.
