Maldives has condemned the coup d’état carried out by the Military Junta of Myanmar.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that Maldives joins the international community in condemning the military coup carried out on February 1, in Myanmar.

Maldives has expressed concern over the growing number of innocent lives being lost and atrocities against the people of Myanmar, by the Military Junta.

In this regard the government reiterated its call to cease the “unlawful” detention of leaders of the civilian government and unarmed protestors.

Further, the statement goes on to read that the island nation has urged the maintenance of the captives’ democratic rights, preserved in Myanmar’s constitution.

Maldives remains in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in their efforts to realize their democratic aspirations that are interlaced with peace and freedom.

The country has called on the Military Junta to respect the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law and call for an immediate end to the State of Emergency imposed in the wake of the coup.

Maldives also urged the Military Junta to accept the vote and subsequent wishes of the people, to relinquish the power to the elected National Assembly and safeguard the political and social stability of Myanmar.

The coup saw the country’s democratically elected government being overthrown by senior military officers during February. International media reports that daily protests are being held in Myanmar against the coup and there have been violence from the military personnel, observed to be using force on protectors. Over 50 fatalities have been reported.
