The Maldives received the UNESCO Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation along with USD 20,000 in recognition of the innovative online learning initiative conducted by the Ministry of Education following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UNESCO Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation was created by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) in association with the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO. The theme for the award in 2020 was “Educational Innovation in Response to Pandemic and Other Emergencies”, with the award recognizing individuals or institutions in the Asia-Pacific region that have innovated the learning process for children, especially in light of the barriers to providing education caused by Covid-19,

The "Telikilaas" series was initaited by the Ministry of Education on 15 March 2020 to ensure learning went uninterrupted for children as schools closed across the country due to Covid-19. The "Telikilaas" was broadcasted on local channels like PSM’s Munnaaru channel, YES TV, and Dhivehi Channel. The Education Ministry has since extended their gratitude to those local broadcasters that assisted them in ensuring that students had access to education despite the prevailing difficulties of the pandemic.

In thanking the innovation fueled by teachers and parents, and the support for the "Telikilaas" series on behalf of students, the Ministry of Education expressed hopes that everyone would continue working as a team to achieve similar successes in the future.
