An expatriate worker has been deported from the Maldives for ridiculing Islam.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the expatriate worker, an Indian national was permanently deported from the island nation on October 13.

A video circulating on social media shows the Indian national mocking the religion while in a state of intoxication on the streets of the Maldives capital, Malé City. The man was taken into police custody on October 2, the same night as the incident.

Once presented to court for his remand hearing, the man was released, however, the police institution continued investigations.

The video shows the man claiming that he has influence over the country’s courts. The man is to have claimed that he did not remember any of the things he said or did, later.

The deported Indian national has since apologized to the public over the matter.
