The Minister of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, signed the condolence book for the late Shri Pranab Mukherjee, former president of India.

In his message penned following the demise of India’s 13th president on Thursday, FM Shahid wrote that he received the news of Mukherjee’s passing with deep grief. He further wrote that he had the honor of working with Mukherjee during his second term as the Foreign Minister of the country.

Highlighting that Mukherjee welcomed him “with warmth” during his first bilateral visit to India during October 2007, the foreign minister stated that Mukherjee was a Statesman extraordinaire, a committed and sincere leader, and a dedicated public servant.

A fact exemplified by his five decades of service in varying capacities and roles. His loss is not only a loss to India, but to the region as a whole"

The Maldives joins the Government and people of India in mourning this profound loss, said FM Shahid.

The Condolence Book was opened by the Indian High Commission following the demise of the former president on August 31, aged 84. Mukherjee's funeral took place on September 1, with “full military honors”.

During his visit to the High Commission, FM Shahid also recounted fond memories of his interactions with former President Mukherjee when both served in the capacity of Foreign Ministers.
