The People’s Majlis will go into recess on August 31.
While it was initially set to go into recess from August 27, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla while presiding over Wednesday’s parliament sitting, noted that the Majlis regulations allow them to work till the last Monday of August.
She said that doing so will allow them to complete work on eight additional bills.
The sittings of the People’s Majlis are divided into three sessions a year, and the speaker has the authority to assign the dates for the commencing and closing of the sessions.
Regulations state that the first term is held from February through April, with the second term commencing after a month-long recess.
While the parliament will go into a second recess on Monday, sessions will resume for a third term in October.
Some of the work completed during the ongoing session include delaying the local council elections due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while a number of cabinet ministers were summoned for questioning as part of the work to hold government institutions’ accountable.
