Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) is to resume work and elect an executive committee next month.

After years remaining inactive, MJA in a statement on Sunday announced plans to elect its executive committee before September 13.

As such, an Extraordinary General Meeting has been scheduled for September 5 for this purpose. The meeting will be held virtually.

MJA has also decided to dissolve the current members’ registry and create a new one, due to various issues including some members leaving association. Applications are now open for membership.

While a final registry is to be publicized on September 4, MJA said that those do not apply for membership right now can only do so after the election of the executive committee.

A transitional committee comprising of three members has been formed to carry out the work related to Extraordinary General Meeting. The committee members are Zaheena Rasheed, Hussain Hassan and Mohamed Muzayyin Nazim.

Maldives Journalist Association was formed in 2009, and had been a voice against attacks on journalists while it was active.
