Maldives’ Covid-19 recoveries has surpassed 3,000.

While 78 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Friday, these include 46 locals, 25 Bangladeshis, four Indians, two Sri Lankans and one Nepalese national.

74 of the cases were detected from the greater Malé region while four are from outlying islands.

While this pushes the country’s total case count to 5,572, 90 additional recoveries were reported on Friday as well bringing total recoveries to 3,010. There are 2,540 active Covid-19 cases currently.

There have been 22 deaths from Covid-19, mostly older persons.

With a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases since the lockdown ease plan was implemented, Covid-19 cases from outlying islands have also increased.

While the country entered the third phase in July, this allowed the reopening of borders on July 15. Over 6,000 tourists have arrived in the Maldives since, and some of them have tested positive for Covid-19 as well. As such, Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in at least nine resorts since border reopening.

Cases have been detected from 14 inhabited islands as well.

A surge in Covid-19 cases was seen after the country entered the third phase of lockdown which prompted authorities to reintroduce a curfew in the greater Malé region.
