Noting that they also discussed the Covid-19 pandemic response, the minister thanked the US government “for providing frontline support and assistance towards economic relief and recovery to the Maldives”.

Pompeo tweeted that the United States “will continue working with Maldives to fight Covid-19 and promote sustainable economic development”.

The secretary of state further said that he looks forward to “growing the US-Maldives relationship and strengthening [the] partnership”.

The State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said that the call between Shahid and Pompeo “shows that the US-Maldives relationship has never been stronger” and added that it “will only grow from here”.
