Pompeo and Foreign Minister Shahid spoke via phone on Monday

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has discussed the Covid-19 pandemic US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two spoke via phone on Monday.

In a tweet posted afterwards, Shahid said that he had “an excellent conversation” with the US secretary of state, “on enhancing Maldives-US bilateral and multilateral cooperation”.

Noting that they also discussed the Covid-19 pandemic response, the minister thanked the US government “for providing frontline support and assistance towards economic relief and recovery to the Maldives”.

Pompeo tweeted that the United States “will continue working with Maldives to fight Covid-19 and promote sustainable economic development”.

The secretary of state further said that he looks forward to “growing the US-Maldives relationship and strengthening [the] partnership”.

The State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said that the call between Shahid and Pompeo “shows that the US-Maldives relationship has never been stronger” and added that it “will only grow from here”.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih spoke to US National Security Advisor Robert C. O’Brien back in May. The US official is to have offered Covid-19 critical care assistance during the call.

The United States donated USD two million to support Maldives’ Covid-19 response efforts in May, while a consignment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was donated last month. The donation is worth over USD 78,000.
