Strong winds and rain showers of the southwest monsoon have caused damage to households of Fuvahmulah City.
The city council revealed that strong winds and continuous rain showers in the region have uprooted palm trees and torn off roofs in some households of the city.
Some houses were damaged due to the fallen trees as well.
Further, the city’s roads have also been flooded due to incessant rain showers and that authorities assisted in placing sand bags at the entrances of households in order prevent the flood water from entering.
The council has also extended the required assistance to those who have had their household property damaged due to the strong monsoon activities.
City residents have been urged to contact the council through 7315001 to report damages, the council has not disclosed numbers of affected households.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) had issued a yellow alert from Laamu atoll to Fuvahmulah City early Saturday.
While several regions of the island nation are being heavily affected by the southwest monsoon showers, southernmost Addu City has been severely affected by heavy rain showers which caused deep flooding throughout most of its districts as well. The monsoon has wreaked havoc across the city, inflicting damage reportedly heavier than ever before.
The department urged individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather conditions and strong monsoon activities such as heavy rain, strong winds and choppy seas.
Choppy seas will prevail throughout the entire country with the possibility of swell wave surges during high tides.
Generally, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over the entire country with occasional heavy showers in the south and central atolls.
Winds will vary between west to northwesterly at 13 – 23 miles per hour, gusting at 45 – 55 miles per hour during showers.
