Extensive discussions held on bolstering Maldives-Canada ties

Discussions touched down on climate change, women's rights as well as Maldives rejoining the Commonwealth of Nations

Extensive discussions have been held on strengthening the existing cooperation between Maldives and Canada in the international arena.

This was done during a courtesy call paid by the Director General for South Asia at Global Affairs Canada, David Hartman and Ambassador of Canada David McKinnon on Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Monday.

Discussions mainly revolved around bolstering partnership in areas such as climate change, environment, countering terrorism as well as violent extremism, revealed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In light of some of the topics discussed such as Maldives bid to rejoin the Commonwealth of Nations and women’s rights, FM Shahid noted that Canada has been one of the staunchest supporters in the process of Maldives rejoining the Commonwealth.

Further, he expressed gratitude for the continuous support extended by the Canadian government.

Canada is a close friend and a staunch supporter of the Maldives bid to re-join the Commonwealth. Thanked Canadian government for their relentless efforts in this regard”

Canadian diplomats Hartman and McKinnon were accompanied by Political Officer at the Embassy of Canada, Indirani Jayawardena.

The meeting was also joined by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Director Shiuneen Rasheed, and the ministry's Desk Officer Saifulla Waleed.
