Following the fire that broke out in the T-Jetty region of capital city Malé, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih visited the victims of the fire who are currently being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Eight of the men, who were rushed to the hospital for burns attained after the fire, were inquired about their condition and the treatment they were receiving.

The President’s visit came after his inspection of the site, along with Minister of Defense and National Security Mariya Ahmed Didi and Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla who arrived at the site shortly after the fire broke out.

At the site, the President had expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the firefighters who were quick to respond, and their bravery.

He noted that the “rapid response” by firefighters and emergency personnel and the generous assistance from volunteers in the region, helped contain the situation before it could spread further to cause more damage.

While this is the second such incident to occur in quick succession, Solih assured the public that the government is working to ensure necessary measures are taken to prevent such terrible incidents in the future.

While it was reported at around 03:40pm, it was completely put out by 05:09pm. Firefighters extinguished the fire over an hour after the fire broke out, with the help of volunteers.

The cause of the fire still remains unclear, however, RaajjeMV understands that the spark was created due to a lit cigarette near an oil bowser while it was refueling a speedboat docked at the T-Jetty.

Authorities are yet to confirm this.

While the speedboat where the fire sparked sank after a while and there are reported oil leaks in the region, police revealed that no arrests have been made thus far in the incident.
