Maldives and Malaysia are to sign an agreement, which will allow the use of Maldivian driver’s license in the southeastern nation.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula discussed the matter with her Malaysian counterpart Anthony Loke Siew Fook, during a meeting held at the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly in Canada.

Both parties are to have discussed on signing a mutual recognition agreement, which will allow the use of Maldivian driver’s license in Malaysia and vice versa. They also agreed to expedite the process.

Malaysia decided to ban foreign drivers’ licenses, in January, following changes to its Malaysian Road Transportation Law.

Prior to the ban, Maldivians were able to change their local drivers’ license to one approved in Malaysia, with a letter from the Maldives in embassy Kuala Lumpur.

The transport ministry is also working to convert the Maldivian drivers’ licenses to an international one.
