Second amendment to Judicial Services Commission Act, ratified

Parliament passed the motion to bring the second amendment to JSC act on 21 August

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has ratified the second amendment to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Act on Tuesday.

While the amendment received parliament approval and was passed on 21 August at the 37th sitting of the Parliament, the act has now been published in the government gazette upon ratification.

The President’s Office revealed that amendments were made to the qualifications required from judiciary members, the appointment of the President as well as the Vice President of the Maldives, as well as meetings of the commission.

The amendments are also focused on establishing the office of Department of Judicial Administration and a Judicial Academy.

Further, it also includes variations to powers vested to commissions or investigative committees alongside areas for consideration when the commission makes certain decisions.
