70-year-old woman who fell into air duct succumbs

The 70-year-old woman who fell into an air duct of a building in capital city Malé has succumbed to her injuries.

She succumbed to the injuries attained during the fall from the fourth floor of a building in Maafannu ward of the capital on Thursday afternoon, while receiving treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

She had broken bones in both legs due to the fall, and had also sustained injuries to her head.

While police continues to investigate the case, a similar incident had taken the life of a seven-month old child in 2015 where the child and mother fell into an air duct from the fourth floor.

Several construction companies have drawn criticism for leaving elevator shafts exposed for several days even after the construction work has been completed.
