Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will be focusing on improving judicial administration, says speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

In a special interview with RaajjeMV, Nasheed, a JSC member, said that judicial administration is not the concern of judges and that they should have no authority over it.

Nasheed said that employees in judicial administration should conduct their work with discipline and that the history of other countries show that it is never a good idea for them to form close relationships with judges.

Currently, the Supreme Court oversees the work the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), since it is under the court’s authority.

Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj has proposed an amendment bill to give more authority to JSC, including the power to oversee the DJA and appoint judges in the lower courts. The bill also proposes the DJA to be run by a Chief Judicial Administrator.

According to the bill, the new DJA will be responsible for establishing a judicial administrative policy and oversee the work of the employees under the instructions of court registrars and senior administrators.

The DJA will also be responsible for appointing, promoting, penalizing, and dismissing judicial administrative employees.
