Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), who has the majority of the 19th Parliament, has won the majority of parliament committees as well.
While a meeting was held by the temporary committee to form the parliament committees on Sunday, it decided to give the ruling party 132 member slots from the committees. The remaining 30 slots are to be distributed among other political parties.
Earlier in June, Parliament had passed a motion to increase the parliament committees from 13 to 17, with 71 votes.
While the temporary committee has passed a report to the parliament, it states that all the committees except for the “two for one” committee, shall have 11 members.
The report further reveals that there are 176 member slots for all the committees.
As such, while MDP has 65 seats in parliament, it shall receive 132 slots in the committees, making it eight or nine members in each committee.
In addition, MDP will also get majority in the two for one committee.
The committee report will be presented to the parliament floor at Monday’s sitting.
