Ferry service plans to connect Cochin and Maldives

India is also considering providing speedboats for Maldivians, particularly to students, to move from one island to another

A ferry service will be established to connect Cochin and Maldives, states India’s External Affairs Ministry.

At a press briefing,India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that India is exploring the commencement of a ferry service from Maldives to Cochin.

Maldivians frequently visit the Indian city for the holidays and for medical treatment.

Highlighting that there were a number of projects to connect India to Maldives, Gokhale said the ferry service will significantly enhance connectivity between the two countries.

Negotiations to begin ferry services between Maldives and India was also held during President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.

The Foreign Secretary also said that India is considering high impact community development projects to develop Maldives’ inter-island connectivity, including providing speedboats, particularly to students, to move from one island to another.
