The Prosecutor General’s office has appealed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s case of embezzlement at the Supreme Court.
High Court on 30 May, overturned the eight-year prison sentence imposed on the former VP. Then, High Court had ordered a retrial, citing the Supreme Court order on February 1.
The court stated that certain clauses of the order were annulled shortly after, but that clauses regarding politically motivated verdicts still remains and that there was the possibility of both the defendant and judges being influenced in the case.
Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham confirmed that the appeal was forwarded to the Supreme Court, on Monday.
In June 2016, Adeeb was sentenced to eight years over the embezzlement of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). He was found guilty of embezzling USD five million owed to the state as the acquisition cost of Maabinhuraa in Lhaviyani atoll, after leasing Kurehdhoo Holdings through MMMPRC.
Earlier on Sunday the PG Office announced its decision to appeal the overturned verdict, along with the one of Adeeb’s 15-year sentence issued over the presidential speedboat blast.
High Court has since overturned Adeeb’s prison sentences totaling 33 years.
