Commission on Deaths and Disappearances
Inquiry commission questions activist Ashraf

The Commission had in December 2018 announced that it was investigating 25 cases

Presidential Commission on Enforced Disappearances and Deaths has questioned social media activist Ahmed “Shumba” Ashraf, over comments made regarding the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan.

The Commission, via twitter, revealed that Ashraf has been questioned regarding tweets sent about the journalist’s disappearance in August 2014. Rilwan was last seen in the early hours on August 8, 2014.

Following the interrogation, Ashraf said that the Commission members had acted “very professionally.”

While Ashraf had used his Twitter account to make various claims about the journalist’s fate, he said that he was questioned over claims that Rilwan "has been drowned.”

The Commission questioned another activist, Zahid Rameez, earlier this month, over death threats sent to blogger Yameen Rasheed between 2011 to 2012. Rasheed was brutally stabbed to death in April 2017.

It noted that “threatening to kill a person is a serious offence under the law, and legal consequences will follow.”

The Commission had in December 2018 announced that it was investigating 25 cases, revealing a list of the cases.

While police had in 2017 declared that there was no connection between Rilwan’s disappearance and Yameen’s murder, Husnu Suood- president of the inquiry commission- said that their investigations show that the two cases have the “same pattern,” as well as the murder of parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali. The lawmaker’s body was found at the stairwell of his residence, at around 1:30 am on 2nd October, 2012.
