Jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been transferred to house arrest.
Ahmed Lugmaan, information officer at the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) told RaajjeMV that he was transferred to house arrest at around 1:30am on Tuesday- with conditions. However, Luqman did not disclose these conditions.
It is also not clear whether doctors had made the recommendation to transfer him.
Prior to his transfer to house arrest, Adeeb- who is serving 33 years in prison for corruption and terrorism- had been receiving medical attention at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
According to his family, Adeeb has glaucoma, internal cysts, and kidney stones; he underwent surgery to remove the stones in November 2018.
He was transferred to house arrest on doctor’s orders following the surgery, but was taken back to prison for violating conditions. His Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD) claim that this was against doctor’s orders.
The youngest VP the country has seen, Adeeb was arrested in October 2015 over the explosion aboard the presidential speedboat; which authorities claim was an assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen.
