Government coalition partner and main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has raised 4.8 million for their campaign ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election, the party has said.

MDP’s deputy secretary-general Afshan Latheef says that this is the amount garnered thus far, and that the party is continuing their fund raising effort.

According to the deputy secretary-general, MDP approaches known contributors to their activities, but intend to find fund-raising means that allows for more public participation.

Afshan also said that while the party receives cash donations, they have also had well-wishers supply both the party and individual candidates with paraphernalia, such as paper, paint, and cloth for banners.

MDP is fielding candidates for all but one of 87 constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections, slated for April 6th.
